Tinnitus

If you feel you are hearing noises in your ears such as ringing, buzzing, hissing or pulsing when there is no external noise source to explain it, you may be experiencing a common condition called tinnitus.

The noise or noises you hear may be continuous or intermittent and might be heard in one or both of your ears.

What causes tinnitus?

In some cases, an underlying cause cannot be identified but potential underlying causes include:

  • Loud noise exposure

  • Earwax build-up

  • Ear infections

  • Congestion/sinus problems

  • Hearing loss

  • Medications

  • Ear, neck or head related injuries or issues

  • Stress, anxiety or a dip in wellbeing

In many cases, treating the underlying cause can resolve or improve symptoms but it is important to note, that even when the cause is unidentified, there are options to help alleviate the symptoms and bring them to a level you can cope with.

Is there a cure for tinnitus?

Whilst there is no medical cure for tinnitus, there are many things that can help with management of symptoms and is some cases resolve it completely.  It normally it improves over time due to a process called habituation when the brain grows accustomed to the sounds you are experiencing so that they are much less noticeable.  There are a range of treatments available which can facilitate the habituation process and these in turn make it easier to cope with the condition.

How can Cathedral Hearing help me?

To help you manage your tinnitus symptoms, we recommend booking an Advanced Hearing Assessment.  This takes 90 minutes and costs £70.

At the Assessment, our audiologist will carry out diagnostic tests and closely examine your ear canal and ear drum to determine your general ear health.  Additional pitch and high frequency tone tests will help determine your particular sound sensitivities.

From the test results, our audiologist will then offer advice and guidance to help you manage your tinnitus symptoms. In some cases, we can offer hearing aids which have specialised features for tinnitus management including sound therapy.
